St Mary’s House was established in 1972 (More than 43 years!). It has been a private house, a school and then a hotel and since 1972 a residential care home.
Staff manage the details of the running of the Home and are dedicated to providing care with dignity to the elderly. They strive to make a positive difference to their residents’ lives by providing compassionate, high quality care. Managers are ably assisted by a well-qualified team of Carers, Cooks and Maintenance staff.
Although St Mary’s usually provides long term care, short-term respite care can sometimes be arranged. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission to provide care, particularly for those with dementia.
We would be pleased to show prospective residents and relatives around the home at any mutually convenient time.
St Mary’s House is an elegant Georgian property of character. Building began in about 1747 and during its history there have been many changes. It has been a private house, a school and then a hotel and since 1972 a residential care home.
The house retains much of it’s character whilst having been adapted to provide modern care facilities. It offers well proportioned communal areas and bedrooms, many with original period features.
The house is situated in the market town of Bungay providing easy access to the many shops and services, as well as public transport. Within a few minutes walk is Bungay Castle, the famous Buttercross and several historic churches.
Nearby is Outney Common, a rugged but beautiful open space with public access for walking.
Whilst recognising that some residents prefer privacy and others companionship, we have three different bedroom types available:
St Mary’s House has a large, enclosed garden with mature shrub borders and a 100 year old stunning copper beech tree.
All residents are encouraged to use and enjoy the garden, which is wheelchair-friendly.
New sun canopies afford good shade for those who wish to sit outside on warm, sunny days.
Residents with a keen interest in all things horticultural are most welcome to join and assist the Gardener.
Residents have a choice of two spacious lounges both leading onto the patio and garden. Each sitting room has a television and music centre as well as a choice of books, magazines and board games.
There are also two dining areas adjoining the sitting rooms.
An alarm-call system is fitted in all these rooms.
In the first instance, prospective residents and relatives are encouraged to visit and view the home. Before admission, an assessment is made at home or in hospital by a member of the Senior Care Team to ensure that the Home is able to provide the appropriate care that is required by each individual. Where appropriate, contact is also made with any health or social care professionals involved, so that relevant and additional information is acquired in support of the assessment.
Residents are welcomed into the Home and shown to their chosen room. We encourage all our residents to bring personal items with them to help them settle in their new surroundings. Personal pictures and furniture all help to make a room feel like ‘home’ and we even welcome well-behaved pets! We try to further our knowledge and the care needs of a new resident by completing a pre-admission care plan using information provided by the resident, relatives and any other health professionals. This includes their care needs, preferred daily routine and food likes and dislikes.
Breakfast is usually served in a resident’s room at the time of their choosing, but can also be served later in either of the two dining rooms if preferred.
After breakfast residents are assisted, as required, with washing/showering/bathing and dressing.
Residents can choose to stay in their room or go to one of the communal lounges for all or part of the day.
Morning drinks and lunch are served wherever a resident chooses, including the garden in the summer if requested.
Afternoons are regularly filled with visiting entertainers, but on quieter afternoons the staff will take the opportunity to fulfill individual requests such as a walk around the town, help with a knitting pattern or simply sitting down for a chat.
However, our high staff to resident ratio always allows for quality time and good interaction between residents and staff throughout the day.
Afternoon tea is served each day, again wherever a resident requests.
We have a hairdresser, chiropodist and hand masseur attend the home on a regular basis, and appointments for these are made either at the discretion of the Home or at the request of the resident and/or their relative.
Supper and evening drinks are also served wherever is preferred and bedtime is again at a time most suited by the resident. It is not uncommon for ‘night owls’ to keep the night staff company!
The Home is staffed at night by three carers and at least one other on-call. Nightstaff regularly check residents and attend to them if they should call or be found to need assistance with anything.
Each day staff will refer to and update a resident’s care plan and ensure that all necessary care, medication and diet are provided. Any help and assistance provided to residents is determined by the degree of ability or disability, but always ensures comfort and safety without compromising independence.
Visitors are welcome at any time.
Care for Residents with Special Needs
Our high staffing levels ensures excellent personal care for all, but for those with special needs we have the skills and resources to assist in a professional and dignified way.
Incontinence: Residents with continence problems will receive dignified attention to ensure they are always comfortable and hygiene is maintained.
Mobility: We admit residents whose mobility is difficult, painful or compromised. The home has a range of mobility equipment including hoists and stand-aids. Whether it is a case of a resident being just a little slow or unsteady or has complete immobility, the staff are trained and patient in managing all conditions.
Dementia: St Mary’s is registered with the CQC as a home providing Dementia Care. Most of the staff are trained in this field which results in dignified management of a range of presenting behaviours. These may include incontinence, confusion, wandering, anxiety, personality changes and disorders. The ageing process can result in many functional changes and the Home can care for residents who need all help with activities of daily living.
The Home provides a regular programme of activities which include:
Music appreciation, reminiscence therapy, art and crafts, movement sessions, theatrical and musical entertainment and puppetry.
Attendance at local theatrical and musical productions, such as school plays and pantomime, is actively encouraged and facilitated.
We also organise an annual summer outing for the residents, which in the past have included a day-boat on the broads, a trip to the zoo and the Camel Centre.
We always celebrate Birthdays with a homemade cake and candles, and we particularly encourage relatives to join us for these celebration tea parties.
We mark other notable dates with fun events such as Burns Night supper, Easter bonnets, November 5th fireworks and, of course, Christmas is always very special.
We are always pleased to see friends and relatives visit, who will be made most welcome with the offer of a cup of tea!
St Mary’s has long had a reputation for the provision of high care standards. This is directly attributable to the philosophy of care held and implemented by the managers and to the professionalism and commitment of all staff.
We are proud to have a wonderful team of well-qualified and dedicated carers. The team is led and managed by Mrs. Maria and consists of one Head of Care, three Senior Carers and twenty-two care assistants.
All members of staff are given regular training in all aspects of elderly care as well as receiving regular support and appraisals. Most staff have undergone NVQ training and many have reached level 3 or 4.
Throughout the day, staffing is at a high level enabling the Home to provide excellent quality care and personal attention. During the night hours, there are three members of staff on duty and an additional two others on-call.
High staffing levels can best ensure that care is person-centred, and allows staff to spend quality time with the residents. Our staff motto is “If it is possible, I will do it”.
The Home has three lifts; a four-person passenger lift capable of carrying wheelchairs up to the first and second floors, a vertical-rise lift enabling wheelchair access to our West wing, and also a stair-lift providing easy access to our East wing.
Specialist baths are fitted in all wings of the house and each one has an alarm-call system.
The Home is equipped with several hoists and specialised aids for assisting less mobile residents.
LAUNDRY: All laundry is attended to on the premises, and is covered within the fee structure.
A dry-cleaning service is available in town.
We offer a full range of freshly prepared meals and residents’ requirements for special diets or needs are easily catered for. Our home-made dishes are prepared daily on the premises by our competent cooks, who delight in seeing residents really enjoy their food. The fresh produce we use is sourced from our nearby grocer and butcher.
Whilst we have two dining rooms, residents may take their meals where they like, particularly in the morning when breakfast in bed is very popular! We know how important it is for everyone to keep in touch with their family and friends and we are very happy for visitors to take meals with our residents.

We are registered with the Cinnamon Trust, a national charity supporting the elderly and their pets.
The Home has been awarded a 5-star rating for its provision and support of keeping pets and their owners together.
TELEPHONE: Residents have use of the telephone which can be connected to a number of points throughout the Home. Alternatively, residents have the use of the cordless telephone which can be used anywhere in the Home including the garden. Residents may make arrangements for the installation of their own telephone line, for which they will be responsible.
RELIGION: Religious services are held in the Home by visiting ministers of various denominations.
The local group of medical General Practitioners is available under the National Health Service to residents and one of these doctors visits the Home on a regular basis.
We have a good working relationship with the District Nurses who come to perform nursing care as necessary.
We can arrange hospital visits as well as appointments for opticians and dentists.
